Northgate This August: New Local Spots And A Full Amphitheater Calendar

Stand on the patio at Goat Patch Brewing's Northgate taproom on a Thursday evening and you'll notice something that wasn't true here three years ago: the crowd waiting for a table isn't just passing through on the way to a chain drive-thru. They live within a few miles and they came on purpose. That's a small shift, but it says something bigger about what's happened along Voyager Parkway since 2024.

For most of Northgate's existence, the neighborhood's food and drink identity was written by national chains. The area took its name from the northern entrance to the Air Force Academy, and as the InterQuest and Voyager corridor filled in over the past decade, it became known for exactly the kind of businesses that need high visibility and easy freeway access. In-N-Out picked a spot near InterQuest and Voyager. So did other national brands chasing the same daytime traffic. If you wanted a burger or a sandwich in Northgate, you almost certainly picked it from a menu that looked the same in a dozen other states.

That's still true for plenty of Voyager Parkway. What's new is that it's no longer the whole story.

The last two years added something the neighborhood didn't have

Three businesses opened along Voyager Parkway since 2024 that have nothing to do with a franchise agreement, and each one exists because its owners looked at Northgate and decided the neighborhood was missing something specific.

• Goat Patch Brewing Company opened its second taproom ever at 12245 Voyager Parkway in March 2025, more than seven years after its original Old North End location opened in the redeveloped Lincoln School on North Cascade Avenue. The Northgate spot isn't a copy. It's the first Goat Patch location to include a real kitchen, the Grazing Goat Kitchen, serving shareable plates the flagship never offered.
• New Day Cafe, a breakfast and lunch spot the Luna family started in Rockrimmon back in 2013, opened its second location ever in Northgate Plaza at 13375 Voyager Parkway, taking over the space that used to hold Decadent coffee and dessert bar.
• Por Favor Tacos & Tragos set up at 13395 Voyager Parkway, Suite 140, close enough to the other two that a resident could hit all three without leaving the same stretch of road.

None of these are outposts of a chain expanding into a new metro. They're independent businesses that picked Northgate specifically, which is a different kind of vote of confidence than a corporate site-selection algorithm choosing a freeway exit.

Goat Patch's own team said the quiet part out loud when they announced the expansion. A member of the brewery's team explained the decision to the Colorado Springs Gazette this way:

"It's an area that doesn't have a local brewery … until you get to Monument, and Pikes Peak."

That's not marketing copy. That's a brewery admitting that an entire side of the city had commercial density but no local taproom to call its own, and choosing to fix it.

An amphitheater that keeps the north side occupied on weekends

If the food and drink scene changed how Northgate residents spend a Tuesday night, Ford Amphitheater has changed what a Saturday looks like. The venue sits at 95 Spectrum Loop in the InterQuest hub that the Gazette has described as ringed by Flying Horse, Briargate and Northgate, close enough that most people on this side of town treat it as their own venue rather than a downtown trip.

August alone has already hosted the Black Crowes on the 1st and Sublime on the 6th. Here's what's left on the calendar this month:

A show like the Philharmonic playing Elfman's Batman and Beetlejuice scores under the stars used to mean a drive toward downtown or further. Now it's a short trip from most Northgate driveways, without touching I-25 traffic headed the other direction.

What hasn't changed, and why that matters too

Not everything about daily life here needed fixing. Mary Kyer Park, an 11-acre neighborhood park along Voyager, has had the same draw for years: a duck pond with landscaped waterfalls, a 0.6-mile paved loop that works for strollers and wheelchairs, and a connection to the La Foret trailhead for anyone who wants to keep walking past the loop. It's still the default answer when someone asks where to take a toddler or a dog on a Tuesday afternoon.

The Colorado Springs portion of the Santa Fe Trail runs along the old Santa Fe-Topeka rail line for roughly 16 miles between Woodmen Road and Palmer Lake in Monument, and it's flat enough that plenty of Northgate residents use it to bike to work instead of driving. The trail sits far enough from I-25 that you lose the highway noise without losing the convenience of a straight shot toward Monument or south toward the rest of Colorado Springs.

These routines predate Goat Patch, New Day Cafe, Por Favor, and every touring act Ford Amphitheater has booked. They're not going anywhere, and that's the point. Northgate added an evening identity without disturbing the parts of daily life that already worked.

The neighborhood added an evening without losing its mornings

Put those two threads together and you get a fuller picture of what living in Northgate looks like right now than either one gives you alone. The morning dog walk around Mary Kyer Park's duck pond hasn't changed. The bike commute down the Santa Fe Trail hasn't changed. What's different is what happens after 5 p.m., when a resident now has a genuine choice between a Grazing Goat Kitchen pizza, tacos at Por Favor, or a seat at Ford Amphitheater for a national touring act, instead of the same rotation of drive-thru options that used to define an evening on this side of town.

That's not a claim that Northgate became a destination overnight. It's a claim that the neighborhood spent the past two years filling in a gap its own newest business owners noticed first, and residents who haven't been down Voyager Parkway since last summer are missing a version of the neighborhood that didn't exist yet.
